About Us

We are an award winning artisanal whiskey and rum distillery in Oakland, CA. When we founded the distillery in 2014, we were the first distillery in Oakland since before Prohibition. As whiskey and barrel aged rum makers, we carried out production for almost two years, from the time we launched production, until we finally had our first product to sell. We released our first batch of rye whiskey in 2016, first batch of bourbon and rum in 2017 and single malt whiskey, a bottled-in-bond in 2020.

At Wright & Brown we believe good whiskey and rum are a combination of tradition, technique and time. With every batch, we pay homage to the early American whiskey and rum makers across the country who built an entire industry and culture with the grains they could find on neighboring farms and hand-built copper stills.  We believe that the best whiskey and rum are made slowly, beginning as seeds in the fields and ending as the golden liquid in your glass. We work with exclusively non-GMO grains and source much of our rye, corn and malted barley from family farms in California who practice organic farming methods.    

In 2019 we were proud to become one of the first two California craft distilleries to ever bring home a gold medal for a California made rye whiskey at the prestigious American Distilling Institute’s National Judging of Craft Spirits. This followed silver medals for our rye, bourbon and barrel aged rum at ADI in previous years. In 2021, our straight bourbon brought home a Good Food Award from the Good Food Foundation, which honors spirits of high quality, exceptional flavor and sustainable and socially conscious practices.
